The whole story
of Porsche aircraft engines

In four detailed chapters on 184 pages, this book brings the history of Porsche's aircraft engine activities to life. From the first airship engine designed by Prof. Ferdinand Porsche in 1908, to the Austro-Daimler flying boat and Daimler-Benz bomber engines with up to 3,500 hp, the first aircraft engines based on the 356 and finally the legendary PFM 3200.

Chapter 1

Prof. Ferdinand Porsche - his beginnings as a designer of the first aircraft engines

Chapter 2

Porsche aircraft engine designs and aviation development until 1945

Chapter 3

Porsche Type 678, 702 and PFM 3200 aircraft engines - development and technical details

Chapter 4

The airplanes with Porsche engines - including Mooney M20, Pützer Elster and many more.

PFM 3200

The culmination of development

Author Jürgen Gassebner meticulously examines the Porsche PFM 3200 aircraft engine based on the 6-cylinder boxer engine of the Porsche 911. Intensive discussions with PFM expert Uwe Sauter and Porsche design legend Hans Mezger (†2020) formed the basis for this exciting chapter, as did many years of research and his own flying experience with the jewel in the crown of Porsche aircraft engine history.

Detailed down to the smallest detail

Technology made transparent

Specially produced photographs of a freshly restored PFM 3200, including its technical inner workings, as well as numerous diagrams, drawings and documents provide a previously unknown insight into the technology of this Porsche aircraft engine.

100,000 km in 600 flying hours

Around the world with the PFM 3200

A separate chapter is dedicated to the round-the-world flight with the Mooney PM20K, during which around 100,000 kilometers were covered in 600 hours - without the PFM 3200 ever letting the crew down. Another chapter tells the story of the transfer of a Mooney from the USA to Europe.

Porsche design for the Mooney

Porsche Aviation -
more than just aircraft engines

It is largely unknown that Porsche's aviation activities went far beyond the design and manufacture of aircraft engines. The Porsche Design department not only designed the control lever for the single lever operation, but also a complete cockpit interior for the Mooney M20. Designer Rob Powell brings this project to life with personal drawings and memories.

Pützer Elster and the 678 aircraft engine

D-ELKY - the flying ambassador of the Porsche Museum

Jürgen Gassebner is not only a recognized Porsche specialist, but also writes from his own pilot experience as the owner of the Pützer Elster B "D-ELKY". The model in which the first examples of the Porsche 678 aircraft engine were tested. He spent several years restoring this aircraft. The book provides a detailed insight into the work and the restoration of the matching type 678 aircraft engine.

The PFM 3200 was not the end

Porsche and the future
of Urban Air Mobility

The end of the PFM 3200 after only around 150 units were built did not mean the end of Porsche's aviation activities. In October 2019, Porsche began a partnership with Boeing for the further development of Urban Air Mobility projects. This book is also dedicated to this future project.
